Psychotherapy and Consultation

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a relationship with a licensed mental health professional focused on helping an individual, group, or family achieve mental and emotional health through increasing awareness of and gradually changing thought and behavioral habits. Psychotherapy focuses on resolving symptoms related to psychological diagnoses.

Consultation

Behavioral consultation is a process through which a person receives feedback or guidance with the goal of improving functioning. The focus of a consultation can include improving parenting, making major life decisions, or changing communication patterns in a relationship. Consultation is typically not a covered benefit by health insurance companies.

Wellness Visits

Wellness visits are designed to help people gain and maintain optimal functioning in life, with special focus on psychological health. These visits do not focus on resolving symptoms related to specific psychological diagnoses, but focus instead on preventing the development of problems or improving areas of emotional and psychological functioning.

What’s the difference?

Both psychotherapy and consultation emphasize improved functioning of an individual or a system. Psychotherapy typically refers to when dysfunction has reached a level of impairment significantly limiting functioning and the symptoms cross a clinical threshold.

Behavioral consultation refers to improving the performance of a person or group in responding to a uniquely challenging set of obstacles. These consultations typically focus on resolving a specific problem.

Wellness care is often best suited for clients experiencing mild psychological distress but do not meet criteria for a mental health disorder. Wellness visits are often part of an individual’s ongoing health maintenance plan. This care is not covered by health insurance or able to be covered by Flexible Spending Account funds.
